Unusual Relics: Tops: Tannersville, NY

In this installment of Grand Union turned Tops stores, we look at a very late and large Grand Union store in the Catskills. Photos were taken on March 1, 2018 and September 4, 2019.

From the first tour, we come across this random "Tops" cart that doesn't fit with the rest of the carts - the America's Choice logo on the seat flap suggests this is an A&P type - Technibilt model 3638.

Store was built in the mid-1990s as a Grand Union.

Under these trailers lay a bunch of vintage carts that appear to be either Technibilt 3638s or Unarco/Folding Carrier Corp. Many of which appear to be former A&P carts. Where they got them is unknown.

Decrepit trailer with a faded Pathmark logo and a bunch of A&P-type carts underneath it.

Restroom signs are Grand Union leftovers. Restrooms contain 1994-1997 Kohler Wellcomme and Highcliff 1.6 gpf toilets.

Checklane lights are newer.

Newer Instore cart and Grand Union Technibilt from April 2000. Might be the only store still carrying Grand Union carts in full.

  1. Was this actually a totally new store in the 1990's, or perhaps an older location that was upgraded/expanded?

Comparing the outside it looks similar (but not identical) to the Valatie store (now an Ocean State) which was a totally new build (the medical offices to the left are the older store, itself expanded a bit and a replacement for the original store down the street that is now a hardware store).

One thing that makes it a question is the frame over the checkouts, which looks to be a red color (common in older stores) and could have once had the glasswork with fresh clean and good in it?
