Running Into a Former Kmart

Our next post is an update to an earlier post. See From the Archives: Kmarts are Falling (#3396 and #7044) for this store's previous use.

Runnings took over the former Kmart space in Fall 2019.

At some point, Runnings ditched the Versacart S-160L shopping carts in favor of these Precision Wire 348W carts. To the untrained eye, these can be mistaken for Hannaford shopping carts.

Inside the flooring has been converted to concrete and the lighting was converted to LED strips.

The End of Save-a-Lot #835

In this post, we will take a look at a Save-a-Lot that was months away from closing.

All photos taken on 28 December 2020.

This older store on Altamont Avenue in Rotterdam, NY would close on May 22, 2021.

While the logo on the outside was updated, the store retained much of the decor featuring the pre-2003 logo.

The aisle markers use the 2003 logo, with the numbers being written out with the numeral and word. These are from the mid-2000s.

From the Archives: Tour de Chanatry

Today's post takes us back to Utica, NY for a look at another independent grocery store.

All photos taken on September 16, 2019.

The store shown here at French Road opened in 1988 and was originally 30,000 square feet. Within the next decade it was expanded to about 46,000 square feet.

This store's Aisle 12 is home to greeting cards and personal care items.

FLASHBACK: A Look Inside Shaheen's IGA

Today on FLASH BACK, we go back to September 10, 2018 to an uncommon franchisor in this part of the state.

This is Shaheen's IGA in Tupper Lake, NY. Currently run by the fourth generation of the Shaheen family and has served the community since 1926, though this building certainly came much later.

Cart Tax: Store uses classic Cari-All shopping carts.

FLASHBACK: Former Tops #709

Today on FLASH BACK, we go back to September 10, 2018 to tour a Tops that was months away from closing, and also redundant.

This store in the Flower Mound Plaza on the Essex County side of Saranac Lake was another store to close in the 2018 Tops bankruptcy. This store like many Adirondack stores went through the GU > Tops > GUFM > Tops cycle. This store is also currently empty.

FLASHBACK: Former Tops #372

Today on FLASH BACK, we go back to July 14, 2018 to tour a Tops that was months away from closing.

Like many CNY stores, this store at 4141 South Salina Street in Syracuse was a P&C Foods, however it was empty for a few years prior to Tops opening in 2012. The store was among one of 10 stores to close as a result of their 2018 bankruptcy filing. Currently the space is empty.

FLASHBACK: This was a Kmart?!

Today on FLASH BACK, we go back to May 21, 2018 to examine our next Upstate NY Runnings store, a store on the nearly-empty corridor of NY-69 in Rome, NY.

This exterior quite frankly resembles a Home Depot does it? Well, prior to HD's arrival to the Copper City, this building was home to Kmart #7664 from 1994 to 2002.

Inside there is nothing resembling Kmart. Typically when a store like Lowe's or Home Depot moves into a space like this, they gut the entire interior, this one being no exception.
