FLASHBACK: New York's First Wal-Mart

Today on FLASH BACK, we go back to March 12, 2018 to what was the very first Wal-Mart store to open in the state of New York. Also included at the bottom of the post is an unusual specimen in this part of the country.

This unassuming Wal-Mart Supercenter in the Rochester suburb of Henrietta is actually the first Wal-Mart store to open in the state of New York, opening on or around April 2, 1991, predating store #1610 by about three months. In 2004, this store was expanded to the Supercenter design, with a Supercenter completion date of 3/23/2005. The store's ID number is 1619.

Walking inside, this store has your typical Supercenter interior consisting of open ceilings in grocery and drop ceiling in the rest of the store. Also to note is the presence of the Black 2.1 decor, which was used in 2017, and in this store, replaced Impact v2 decor from 2011.

For a store of 1991, the indoor part of the garden center looked like something you would find in stores that opened a few years later.

That concludes our tour of the store. But wait, there's more!

Date Photographed: October 9, 2018

A unique feature of this store is this Walmart fuel station, which was originally used by the adjacent Sam's Club until its January 2018 closure. The next closest store with a fuel station is in Springville, NY.
