Absurdities in Layout and Décor: Hannaford of Watertown, NY

We take a break from the onslaught of Grand Union turned Tops stores to present something a little more... disturbing.

All photos taken on October 11, 2018.

This was branded under the Shop 'n Save name like all stores outside of Maine that were later re-branded as Hannaford in 1997.

Along the right-hand wall is the Fresh Fruits 'n Vegetables, with signage stylized like the Shop 'n Save nameplate. Was this décor here when this store was Shop 'n Save?!

The back wall of services.

Unlike the typical Hannaford layout, Cold Beer is here instead of a full-on Dairy section. Also Frozen Foods is in the front of the store due to the horizontal aisle layout.

Can't help but plug an Aisle 12. These signs are one of the few things Hannaford.

  1. That lettering sure looks like what they had when they first opened in the Albany area (and that was under Shop 'n Save).

Also just FYI - the stores still bearing the Shop 'n Save name (the one I know of locally is in Ravena, NY) are stores that Hannaford supplies but doesn't own.

There were several others around the area but those have since been sold to the company (likely as owners wanted to retire), while the Ravena one is actually an old Grand Union that someone took over after their bankruptcy.

    1. I believe the case for every store outside of Maine prior to 1997, and even some in Maine! It's kind of confusing.

Another store to my knowledge that also bears the Shop 'n Save name is another former Grand Union in Schagticoke, NY (which goes by the name of Hoosic Valley Shop 'n Save). Most likely another independently-owned store supplied by Hannaford. They seem more like franchised stores given how much they look like Hannaford stores on the inside, which seems to show how much influence they have on them.
