The Roadtrip from Hell

Since the New York State Thruway had its tollbooths removed and went cashless, this roadtrip was done on a few NYS Routes north of the Thruway. Since several things were covered along the way, here are some significant highlights of yesterday's trip. All pictures taken on August 15, 2020.

PIT STOP #1

Location: Bridgeport, New York

This was the first stop of the trip. Not particularly interesting since most Kinney Drugs locations have a derivative of this building style. Cut off to the left is a Dunkin' Donuts that is paired with this Kinney Drugs.

ACCIDENTAL CAR SHOW VISIT: RT. 31 CARS ‘N COFFEE

While photographing a HomeGoods, I was asked to move my car as a car show was being held in the parking lot. Come to find out it was the Rt. 31 Cars 'N Coffee event. Here are some highlights from that event:

UNUSUAL CONVERSION #1

Location: Clay, New York

This pharmacy-only Walgreens was previously a Bank of America branch that closed years ago and opened late last year. The drive-thru layout with two stalls is indicative of this being a former bank.

SUPERMARKET STOP #1

Location: Willimson, New York

Both this and the Palmyra locations were previously IGA affiliates.

The Flickr crowd really loves their aisle 12 don't they?

SUPERMARKET STOP #2

Location: Palmyra, New York

This one seems to be considerably older. UPDATE: Store closed in early 2022.

Very spacious store with displays spaced out.

Frozen foods along the front wall with a lower ceiling.

Fresh meats, with a partially sloped ceiling. I always found the uppercase Q in some script fonts to be very weird; as they resemble the number 2.

PHARMACOLOGICAL MUTATION

Location: Palmyra, New York

This was a very unusual build for a Rite Aid. The facade is nearly flush with the roofline. Normally the semi-octagonal facade is taller than the rest of the roofline.

BREAKING THE WAL-MART 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO

Location: Greece, New York

The purpose of this trip was to find out if this Wal-Mart has seen any updates since this store was last covered in October 2019. See Breaking the Wal-Mart: Relics Lost and Ruined in The Good, Bad, and Ugly of 2019 for the previous updates. Before we go in however...

As part of this "update", new carts were added, but not brand new carts. As if this store is riding off infamy for being outdated; rather than order M95Zs, they ordered more refurbished M95s. This one's original date code is 11-09, and the refurb plate underneath it is dated 04/20. They added an additional bag loop, but still added those hideous grey bumpers which give the carts THREE colors!

Inside the store...

So far this part of the store has remained untouched. No vile concrete to be seen.

Still bears the 1990s jewelry counter and CRT security monitor. Nice.

Middle electronics hasn't been touched since last year's updates, nice. The cuts in tile border are still intact and the ceiling fan is still hanging for some reason.

The classic D1 Food Center and its tile border have remained untouched.

Shoes seems a little too spacious... what's going on?

Nice... the support beams still have carpet on them.

Did I mention tile border? That never went away, unlike the red register lights.

CONCLUSION: This new paint job had no bearing on the interior. However, the color scheme only serves to accentuate the poorly-updated interior. At least for now, it hasn't been ruined by modernization with ugly pebbled concrete flooring.

NICE PAIRING?

Location: Gates, New York

While Dollar Tree has been in this shopping center for several years, Family Dollar opened within the past year or two, taking out three spaces in the process.

ALDI'S BEEN REMODELED

Location: Gates, New York

This store was updated late last year.

As with many older stores that get remodeled, this one still has its original golden yellow floor tile.

TOUR DE WEGMANS, TEIL EINS

Location: East Rochester, New York

Did you think I'd skip this location, knowing I traveled on Route 31F?

SIGNS OF THE FUTURE

Location: East Rochester, New York

Since when did Big Lots ever use express carts? Seems rather absurd a retailer of their caliber would even conceive such an atrocity.

Because the logo had been updated years previous, going inside is the only way to see if anything has changed.

Interior shows evidence this store was updated to their Store of the Future concept. Furniture section has been opened up in order for it to be moved further up.

The regular carts are believed to be Advance Carts HC200 units, even though these do not have Advance Carts badges. This kind of cart is used as the image for the HC200 on AC's website.

REMODEL EVASION

Location: East Rochester, New York

While this location has evaded a 20/20 remodel, it has a similar color scheme to one. While not too apparent in the photo, some of the silver enamel under the Burger King logo on the front of the building (not the side with the drive-thru) is peeling off, revealing the blue color of the previous paint job. UPDATE: This location was replaced with a smaller building in 2022.

WRONG TURN WOES

Location: Walworth, New York

Misreading a road sign, I went straight (Route 350) instead of turning right (31F), and had to make a stop somewhere to remember to take the correct route. Made a right onto County Highway 205, which this Tops is less than a mile away and on the right.

As for the Tops, this store seems a little... modern.

What you are seeing is not refurbished. This cart, from 2015, has an aftermarket seat flap with a Unarco-like warning label and URL.

Not really much to say. Certainly is a modern store inside and out.

SIGNAGE PARTY!

Location: Newark, New York

Vintage signage that makes the place nice and visible.

GORDMANS HAS LEFT THE BUILDING

Location: Newark, New York

With all Gordmans stores fully liquidated, the spaces that Stage Stores leased are doomed to be donning signage for years to come until another tenant is lined up.

BIG BOX HARDWARE STORE?

Location: Newark, New York

Quite a large facade. Is the interior as big as the facade lets on? We'll see...

This store is fairly large for a hardware store that isn't Lowes or Home Depot.

TOUR DE WEGMANS: TEIL ZWEI

Location: Newark, New York

Another typical late 1980s/early 1990s Wegmans store.

Like the older store in Auburn, this one has a left-handed fresh foods section.

The remainder of this store has drop ceilings.

UNUSUAL CONVERSION #2

Location: Newark, New York

This Rite Aid was previously a Showplace theater.

Interior is your typical Wellness store, not unlike those in newer builds.

MAKE UP YOUR MIND: WALMART SUPERCENTER EDITION

Location: Newark, New York

No joke, most of grocery has a concrete and tile patchwork, and this was like this when the store still had Project Impact from its 2009 expansion.

GOODBYE CNY

Location: Weedsport, New York

With dusk setting in, the signage on this Kinney Drugs is beginning to light up, unlike the Force Ten over the area just a few miles east.

NIGHTTIME NIGHTMARES

Location: Palatine Bridge, New York

With the hellish trip nearly wrapped up, we take a break at a Price Chopper at closing time. The flash did not really work out as well as I wanted it to.

The flash did work better on one of the carts, creating a nice shadow effect.

I feel like this blog post was as long as the trip was, even with parts cut out, so I am finally glad to be wrapping up the post! See you all next time.
