FLASHBACK: Sears Liquidation - Colonie Center - Albany, NY

In this edition of FLASH BACK, we go back to August 9th and September 7, 2017 to cover the liquidation of an original anchor to Colonie Center Mall and encounter some absurdities.

August 9, 2017

Exterior was updated in 2014 after the store was reduced in size.

Empty garden center with grills and a narrow cart corral.

Signage I presume is original 1966 signage.

September 7, 2017

Off in the background is the Whole Foods which uses the part Sears did away with.

Two absurd vintage wire carts are present in the garden center. The left one is a vintage ShopRite cart, manufactured by Folding Carrier Corporation. The one on the right is a Toys Я Us cart, manufacturer unknown.

Is this even a real "slogan"? Any idea on when this was used?

Logo and seat flap make me think this is from the mid-late 1970s. I also believe this cart came from the old Wolf Road location which is now Bed Bath & Beyond.

The lower level at this point as mostly been emptied out.

There is still a good amount of merchandise on the upper level, including furniture.

  1. Both carts make sense, since there was a Toys r Us also on the opposite side of Wolf Road right next to the ShopRite.

Given that this Sears had a fair amount of mostly unused space (upstairs in the back - it had been set up as offices and was open once for a "Clearance" event) they may have just gotten stuck back there somewhere if they somehow made their ways across the road decades back (probably someone bringing stuff over to a bus stop).

I don't go back quite as far as 1966, but that signage was always there from the early 1980's onwards, so it would make sense it was original.
